Sect ion 11 of Act No. 137 of 23 Mar ch 1948 on Hom e Rule of t he Far oe I slands
st at es t hat " Far oese is r ecognized as t he pr incipal language, but Danish is t o be
lear nt w ell and car efully, and Danish m ay be used as w ell as Far oese in public
affair s." By vir t ue of t he said Act t he Far oese language enj oys a high degr ee of
pr ot ect ion and t he pr ovisions of t he Char t er w ill t her efor e not be applicable t o t he
Far oese language, cf. Ar t icle 4 ( 2) of t he Char t er . For t his r eason, t he Danish
Gover nm ent does not int end t o subm it per iodical r epor t s accor ding t o Ar t icle 15 of
t he Char t er as far as t he Far oese language is concer ned.
